Repetition in JI Demos and Performances – How many are best?

I’ve seen many times where JI wasn’t used in training because the instructor claimed the task was too easy to go to all the trouble of using JI. I am wondering whether 3 demonstrations during Step 2 by the instructor and four performances in Step 3 by the learner is really too much. Speaking with Mark Warren, who has researched the original JI program extensively, and looking at both the 1944 and 1946 editions of the delivery manual, it appears the original program had only a minimum of two iterations in both steps. Mark said the developers thought the key point was that when giving the key points, the instructor should stress the reasons for the key points during step 2, and then, in Step 3, ensure the learner understands and recites the key points with reasons. Would instructors be more apt to use the 4-Step method if they didn’t have to rigidly adhere to the 3 – 4 iterations in Steps 2 and 3? What impact would that have on the quality of the instruction? Would the trade off of increased use offset any degradation of effectiveness?
